1. In June 1948, the closing of entry to
Berlin from the west by Soviet forces.
It was an attempt to prevent the
other Allies (USA, France, and Britain)
unifying the western part of Germany. The
British and US forces responded by sending
supplies to the city by air for over a year
(the Berlin airlift). In May 1949 the
blockade was lifted; the airlift continued
until Sept. The blockade marked the formal
division of the city into Eastern and Western
sectors.
2. The Soviet blockade of Berlin between
June 1948 and May 1949. It ultimately
resulted in the division of Berlin, and
consequently Germany, into two separate
administrative units. After World War II,
Berlin was divided into four sectors -
British, US, French, and Soviet - and until
1948 was under quadripartite government by
the Allies. In June 1948, the USSR withdrew
from the combined board and blockaded the
city in response to the introduction of a new
currency in West Germany. The Allies flew in
food supplies (the Berlin Airlift). The
blockade was lifted in May 1949, but the
airlift continued until Sept. The Soviets
created a separate municipal government in
their sector; and in Oct 1949 East Berlin was
proclaimed capital of East Germany. The other
three sectors, in West Germany became a Land
of the Federal Republic of Germany in May
1949.
